Help newcomers feel at home

New Canadians will likely have some cultural, workplace behaviour and practices, and/or communication differences that will require an adjustment mainly for the individual – but also for the employer and existing employees. Helping new Canadians feel comfortable in the workplace and establishing close ties within the community outside of work are critical factors in ensuring you keep your employee around. The more proactive a business can be in this regard, the greater the potential for success! There are several organizations and programs that can help:

Association for New Canadians (ANC)

The ANC provides a wealth of resources that can help new Canadians: adapt, settle, and integrate into their new surroundings; find and establish community connections; and access language training if required. In addition, the ANC can provide cross-cultural awareness workshops, diversity training, and more for employers.

Welcome NL

A project which focuses on building capacity in communities to welcome and retain immigrants. Among other things, Welcome NL offers communities a toolkit of resources to raise awareness and offer guidance on welcoming newcomers.
